1. QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY PARADE – 15th JUNE

London celebrates The Queen’s official birthday in June each year with Trooping the Colour, a fantastic military parade that has taken place in London since 1820.

About Trooping the Colour in London

Trooping the Colour is an annual event that takes place on Horse Guards Parade in London’s St James’s Park in June, marking The Queen’s official birthday.

The ceremony of Trooping the Colour is full of military pomp and pageantry as The Queen carries out an inspection of the troops from the Household Division.

The Queen then leads the troops down the Mall to Buckingham Palace, one of London’s most famous landmarks.

The Queen salutes and guns are fired in Green Park and at the Tower of London. Finally she joins other members of the Royal Family on the balcony to watch the RAF flypast.

2. ROYAL ASCOT -18TH-22ND JUNE

Royal Ascot is Britain’s most popular race meeting. It’s the place to see and be seen for high society, royal watchers, fun seekers and horse racing enthusiasts alike!

Steeped in tradition, heritage and pageantry, Royal Ascot dates back 300 years and is attended by the Royal Family, including Her Majesty the Queen.

Founded by Queen Anne in 1711, Royal Ascot features a daily horse-drawn procession fromWindsor Castle to Ascot Racecourse led by the Royal carriage.

3. WIMBLEDON TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP 24TH-7TH JULY

The world of tennis descends on Wimbledon in South West London every summer for two weeks of tennis, strawberries and cream, and good-natured queuing.

Wimbledon is one of four annual Grand Slam tennis tournaments held around the world. It’s the world’s longest-running and most prestigious tennis tournament. Games are still played on the original playing surface, grass, and there’s a strict white-only dress code for players.

The tournament attracts around 500,000 spectators and millions of television viewers worldwide.

During the first week, the early rounds of the Singles and Doubles matches are played, with the top seeds playing on Centre Court and Courts 1 and 2. The Ladies’ and Men’s Singles Finals take place over the final weekend of the Championships.

4. PRIDE LONDON 25TH JUNE-30TH JUNE

Pride London Festival 2013

Founded in 2004, Pride London is now Europe’s largest non-ticketed event. The parade, commencing at Baker Street and featuring floats and music, is always one of the most vibrant events in the London calendar.

This year’s event is themed around ‘Love (and Marriage)’ and lots of special events are planned. Full details will be announced in due course, but at present the volunteer-run festival is looking for donations and volunteers to ensure that all events can take place.

1. LONDON WONDERGROUND

The magnificently quirky London Wonderground returns for a second year of cabaret, music, circus and strange curiosities.

Taking place in the coach park between the Royal Festival Hall and the London Eye, the festival is centred around the Speigeltent, in which you can watch a diverse range of performances from top contemporary talent. Visitors can also enjoy bars, outdoor performances and fringe shows in the London Wonderground event space.

Headline Acts at London Wonderground

The headline performance this year is the thrilling Limbo, created by the team behind last year’s acclaimed show Cantina. Limbo is a mix of illusion, circus, magic and dance that promises to mesmerise audiences this summer.

Other acts to look forward to include the Horne Section, an entertaining mix of music and stand-up comedy, the House of Burlesque and Al Murray the Pub Landlord’s Southbank Saloon.

2. CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW  From 21 May 2013 to 25 May 2013

The annual long-distance race starts from three different points in Greenwich Park and covers 26.2 miles. The biggest crowds of spectators gather at Tower Bridge and Embankment and the emotional finish of the Marathon takes place on the Mall in front of Buckingham Palace. This year the race runs around the newly restored Cutty Sark with good viewing points in Cutty Sark Gardens. The Greenwich Foot Tunnel (with new lifts) will be open (it will have a one way – south to north – flow for two hours between 10.30 am and 12.30 pm to allow spectators to cross to the north side of the route). Around 35,000 runners take part, nearly 80 per cent of whom are fundraising for charity (Marathon places are allocated by ballot; the ballot to run in 2013 is closed but there is still an opportunity to take part by running for charity – see the website for details). Spectators can plan where to watch the London Marathon using an interactive map of the course online.

EVENTS IN LONDON –   FEBRUARY HIGHLIGHTS 2013

1. LIGHT SHOW

Jan 30-Apr 28 Hayward Gallery, Southbank Centre, London, SE1 8XX

The use of light as a medium is the focus of this major exhibition which features Dan Flavin’s minimal neon constructions, Jenny Holzer’s conceptually driven word projections and Conrad Shawcross’s kinetic machines among the sculptures, installations and environments on show, from the 1960s to the present day.

2. THE VIEW FROM THE SHARD

Opening on February 1, 2013, the View from the Shard is a four-storey observation deck on floors 68 to 72 of the Shard, offering Londoners and visitors with a good head for heights panoramic, 360-degree views across the capital and beyond (up to 64 kilometres, or 40 miles in old money, on a clear day) from 244 metres (800 feet) up; almost twice the height of any other viewing point in London. Visitors will travel in high-speed lifts that take just 30 seconds to reach the ‘View’, which also features multimedia displays and installations. The experience will include tongue-in-cheek illustrations of famous Londoners past and present, including Margaret Thatcher and Karl Marx on a tandem and Vidal Sassoon and Vivienne Westwood giving Charles I a makeover. At ground floor level, visitors will see video screens and display panels showing digital maps of London and film footage of city life. In a decidely upmarket twist on elevator muzak, a soaring anthem recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra and the Joyful Company of Singers will provide the soundtrack to the ascent. In the viewing galleries, digital ‘Tell:scopes’ with large touchscreens will enable visitors to explore the city around them in real time, identifying famous landmarks and places of interest, as well as offering alternative day and night-time views of the capital.

3. THE BOOK OF MORMON

PRINCESS OF WALES THEATRE: Coventry St, W1D 6AS

‘South Park’ creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s comedy musical about a pair of hapless Mormon missionaries won nine awards at last year’s Tony awards. It’s so extravagantly sold-out on Broadway – and with such expensive tickets – that this wildly-anticipated West End production may conceivably find itself filled up with impatient New Yorkers flying over for a bargain. Mormonism being a largely American affair, it’s conceivable that the musical -written with ‘Avenue Q’ creator Robert Lopez – may not have quite the same blockbuster impact over here. But it’s unlikely: Parker and Stone enjoy an enormous fan base and considerable critical respect for their bluntly absurd satire and Broadway-pastiching songs (including the Oscar-nominated ‘Blame Canada’). With ‘Mormon’s rapturous US reviews and liability to pull in the elusive heterosexual male dollar, the title of West End blockbuster of 2013 is its to win. The cast includes the two leads from the Los Angeles production, Gavin Creel and Jared Gertner.

Christmas is coming to London Town again…so much to do, so little time to do all that last minute Christmas shopping. Here is a list of events happening around town:

1. CHRISTMAS LIGHTS

London Christmas lights really light up the capital’s streets during the bleak winter months. Christmas in London just wouldn’t be Christmas without the stunning array of decorative lights that adorn the streets throughout the festive season.

Switched on for 2012
The switching on of Christmas lights in the West End have become landmark occasions in London each year, drawing crowds in their thousands in the approach to Christmas. This year the Regent Street and Oxford Street lights are bound to bring in the crowds once more, guaranteeing festive fun for visitors to the capital’s premier shopping district. From the Trafalgar Square Christmas tree and headline grabbing Covent Garden display to the more humble but equally cheery lights on high streets across the city, these festive illuminations bring light and colour to London throughout the winter.

2. CHRITMAS CAROLS & SERVICES

Few places are better for traditional Christmas services and carols than St Paul’s, the spiritual home of Great Britain. To meet the increasing demand, this year St Paul’s hosts a series of concerts throughout the month of December peaking with the excessively popular Midnight Mass service and carol concert. St Christopher Wren’s great dome, which dominates much of the City, fills with the sound of the Cathedral Choir for a large part of the month and the most special services and concerts are free and available to all. The cathedral formed the centrepiece of the reconstruction of London after the Great Fire of 1666 and miraculously went on to survive the Blitz in World War Two when most of the surrounding area was flattened by German bombing raids. It consequently acted as an inspirational symbol of British strength in the nation’s darkest hour and is now an icon of resurrection and rebirth – a potent symbol of all that is associated with Christmas. The festive season kicks off with the dramatic Advent Procession on the last Sunday of November, with words and music focusing on the theme of life and death, heaven and hell, time and eternity, judgement and healing.

Southwark Cathedral‘s popular candlelit carol services take place on the Sunday and Wednesday before Christmas but there are a host of other festive services open to the public throughout December. For the Cathedral Carol Service, the bulk of the singing is done by the boys, girls and men of the Cathedral Choir. The congregation will get a chance to join in and sing some of their favourites while the festive music will be interspersed with readings taken from St Matthew’s account of the birth of Jesus. Be sure to arrive early because the annual Sunday evening event is hugely popular. Located besides the wonderfully odoriferous Borough Market, Southwark Cathedral has gained something of a cult status in recent years following a peculiar incident involving its bishop, Dr Tom Butler, in 2006. Following a Christmas drinks event at the Irish Embassy, the eccentric bishop was found, allegedly tipsy, in the back of a silver Mercedes, throwing children’s toys out of the window. Rumours that he was filling his sack for his cathedral’s Christmas tree were, of course, firmly denied – but it did get people talking about the church in the build up to Christmas, that’s for sure.

Trafalgar Square Christmas Tree & Carols

Since 1947, stately Trafalgar Square receives a majestic Norwegian Christmas Tree as an annual gift from the people of Oslo, thanking Britain for its support and friendship during World War Two. The enormous tree is a popular seasonal tourist attraction, particularly in the fortnight leading up to Christmas, when each evening from Monday 5 December to Thursday 22 December 2011, between 5pm and 9pm, a different choir gathers there to sing carols and raise money for a range of voluntary or charitable organisations. Passers-by are welcome to come and listen to the carols in the square, and even join in the festive cheer. Nelson’s Column is decorated with Norwegian white lights and the tree is illuminated from noon until midnight until the Twelfth Night of Christmas in early January. The tree actually goes up in late November if you want to see it in all its naked evergreen glory. Then, on Thursday 1st December 2011, you can join the Choir of St Martin-in-the-Fields and sing carols around the tree from 6pm before the lighting of the tree at 6.30pm.

New for this year is the Magical Ice Kingdom, a walk-through world of ice and snow with woodland creatures and a unicorn-pulled carriage. Doing your best Torvill and Dean impersonation is a great way to embrace the cold and the Ice Rink – which surrounds the Victorian bandstand and is illuminated by 108,000 pea-lights – is the biggest of its kind in the UK. A turn on the 53-metre-high Observational Wheel offers great views over London’s most popular Christmas attraction. Zippos Circus is always a hit and the show never fails to pull crowds into its heated big top when temperatures plummet while the daredevil Zippos Cirque Berserk entertain the evening crowd. The traditional Angels Christmas Market, with its wooden chalets and various Bavarian-style bars and cafes, is a hoot, as is the Spiegel Saloon, a large, festive and fully covered restaurant. Don’t go with an empty wallet because while the whole thing is not cheap, it’s such fun you’ll want to get into the spirit and spend. (Remember: advanced booking on the main attractions is advised while you’ll need to buy tokens from kiosks dotted around the fair for the many rides.) Free entry to the site means you can just walk around and absorb the festive ambiance – but it will take a strong will not to succumb to the smells and fun on offer.

Join hundreds of other Santas on a festive run through Greenwich Park before relaxing afterwards with mulled wine and Christmas cake. No previous experience is needed for this fantastically festive day. Simply register, turn up on the day, collect your free Santa outfit and tackle the 5km run. The spirit of the event is to be decided solely by the participants, meaning you can decide to walk, jog or run as fast or as slow as you like. Why will everyone be dressed as Santa? Well, ignoring the obvious (the time of year), proceeds from the run will be donated to Home-Start, who help children get the best possible start in life. If you’ve ever fancied a fun run through London whilst dressed as Father Christmas (and let’s face it, who hasn’t?) then this is the one for you.Note: The date for this event is still to be confirmed.

National Children’s Book Week takes place every year in the first full week of October. Designed to highlight the fun of reading and to gently encourage children to get excited about literature, the event has been running for almost 80 years. Themes in the past include Words and Pictures, which sparked a full programme of games, readings and book related events nationwide and in schools and libraries in London throughout the week. Also new in recent years was StarLit, a week-long festival of children’s literature, organised by the Shoreditch Trust, when more than 70 authors, illustrators and poets will meet at Hoxton Square to celebrate the very best of writing for 5-15 year olds.

Attending the London Restaurant Awards several years ago, Evening Standard restaurant critic Fay Maschler decided it could be done better (no offence, Giles Coren). The London Restaurant Festival is the result, an altogether more celebratory and all-encompassing food affair, showcasing a huge variety of events at venues across the capital. The annual festival takes place during October and will incorporate over 800 different restaurants from around the capital. From festival menus to a range of one-off dining events, those who are in touch with London’s foodie scene will certainly not go disappointed. At the Covent Garden Piazza, a range of famous London restaurants will take part in the Supplier’s Market, where they will showcase their flavours, cooking techniques and individual flair as well as selling their produce to hungry consumers. Previous years have also included the highly popular Gourmet Odyssey, which took diners across the city to three top restaurants to sample a different course at each. And for those to enjoy their food with a view, the London Eye transformed a single capsule into a ten-seat ‘pop-up’ restaurant, with each night hosted by one of London’s most celebrated chefs. With esteemed names such as Gordon Ramsay and Richard Corrigan on previous line-ups, guests can be certain of a top class, once-in-a-lifetime dining experience.
